Frequently asked questions about needles

What is the difference between fixed and interchangeable circular needles?

On fixed circulars the tips and the cable are one piece, so every size and every length needs another pair. With interchangeables you buy the tips by size and screw them onto cables of different lengths. Two or three pairs of tips and a few cables take you from a hat knitted in the round to the body of a sweater. Every needle in the shop is interchangeable.

Which cable fits which tip?

Seeknit has three threads, depending on tip size: M1.8 up to 3.0 mm, M2 from 3.5 to 5.0 mm and M4 from 5.5 mm up. Each thread has its own cables, and the Seeknit adapter takes you from one system to the other. Lantern Moon and KnitPro Zing use the same KnitPro connector, so their cables fit both. You will find them all under cables and adapters, and the stoppers that hold your stitches on the cable when you set the work aside under stoppers and holders.

12.5 cm or 5 cm tips?

12.5 or 13 cm tips with a 60 to 100 cm cable are the combination for almost anything: sweater, cardigan, shawl, blanket. The 5 cm short tips are for small circumferences: socks, mittens, children's sleeves, the crown of a hat. With a short cable you can skip double pointed needles and magic loop.

What needle size do I need?

The yarn decides: the label of every yarn in the yarn collection gives the recommended needle, and the pattern gives the gauge you need to reach. Knit a swatch and, if it comes out differently, go half a millimetre up or down. The Seeknit Koshitsu Comfort 2 set covers ten sizes from 2.25 to 5.0 mm, including the in-between sizes that are not sold separately.

Which needle brands do you sell?

Seeknit: Moso bamboo handmade in Japan, with 12.5 cm tips and 5 cm short tips, warm in the hand and so smooth it does not catch mohair. Lantern Moon: ebony wood with a 24K gold plated connector, slow and controlled glide, good for fine yarns and pattern work. KnitPro Zing: anodised aluminium colour coded by size, the fastest of them all. Plus the Seeknit Koshitsu crochet hook, with an aluminium tip and a bamboo handle.
