Frequently asked questions about silk blend yarn

Why is silk added to knitting yarn?

Silk is a long, smooth fibre: it adds lustre, holds a mohair or cashmere yarn together and gives it a more fluid drape. On its own it is not warm, but next to mohair or cashmere it balances the fluff with weight and shine. Tynn Silk Mohair has 28%, Pearl Mohair 30% mulberry silk, and Cardiff Prime 32%, alongside cashmere.

How do I knit with silk blend yarns?

The mohair ones usually held together with a merino or a wool, on 3.5 to 4 mm needles: see the mohair yarns and the wool and merino yarns for the base yarn. Cardiff Prime is knitted on its own, on 3 to 3.5 mm, for fine pieces worn next to the skin. Silk blends are hard to unravel, so knit the swatch first, and the yarn calculator tells you how many balls you need.

How do I wash a silk blend garment?

By hand, in cold or lukewarm water, with wool or silk detergent, no rubbing and no wringing. Dry it flat, out of direct sun, because silk fades. Here you can see all our knitting yarns.
